Friends of Birzeit University was inaugurated in 23rd June 1978 by UK academics in response to the crisis facing Palestinian higher education because of the measures imposed by the Israeli occupation in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Fobzu is as an independent voluntary society financed by members inside and outside British universities, who seek to preserve human rights, encourage liberty of thought and academic freedom.
