Dr. Alami was born in Gaza, finished his high school education there in 1935, and went on to obtain a master’s degree and PhD in civil engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1959 and 1962 respectively. After graduation, he moved to Lebanon to work at the American University of Beirut for 14 years. He then joined Khatib & Alami, an architectural and engineering consulting company that now has 5,000 employees and has offices all over the Middle East. In 1964 Dr. Alami attended the first Palestinian National Council in Jerusalem and was elected as a member of the PLO Executive Committee in 1970 and the head of its Palestinian National Fund. Dr. Alami is concerned in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and his company works on sewage and water treatment projects there. He participates in many charitable activities and built the Zuheir Alami School for Boys and al-Noor Mosque in Gaza.
