The Max Planck Institute is offering scholarships for Doctoral, Postdoctoral, and Senior Fellows who wish to conduct research in Freiburg. This is a unique opportunity for researchers to immerse themselves in a vibrant scientific environment and collaborate with leading experts in their field.

Type of the scholarship: Doctoral, Postdoctoral, and Senior Research Fellowship.

Period or starting date: Scholarships are typically awarded for a period of two to four months.

Available fields of study:

The fellowships are open to applicants from a wide range of disciplines, depending on the research priorities of the departments at the Max Planck Institute. Applicants are encouraged to review the Institute’s website to ensure their field of study aligns with the ongoing research conducted at the Institute.

Application Deadline: Starting Fall 2026, the deadline is 31 October 2025

Funding:
The scholarship covers a monthly stipend:

  • Up to 1,365.00 EUR for Doctoral students
  • Up to 2,500.00 EUR for Postdoctoral researchers
  • Up to 3,000.00 EUR for Professors and experienced researchers
    Note: Travel expenses are generally not reimbursed.

Conditions:
Applicants must be:

  • Doctoral students from foreign or non-MPI-affiliated German research institutions
  • Postdoctoral researchers from foreign research institutions
  • Professors or experienced researchers from foreign research institutions

Applicants must provide:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • List of publications
  • One to three academic publications (PDF, German or English)
  • Research project description (5–10 pages; Doctoral students should provide a detailed 10-page plan)
  • Degree certificates
  • Proof of health insurance

Doctoral students are not necessarily expected to submit publications; however, they should submit a more detailed research plan (approx. 10 pages).

Selection criteria:

  • Academic merit and relevance of research project
  • Demonstrated research experience (especially for Postdocs and Senior Fellows)
  • Alignment with the Institute’s research areas
