The External Academic Relations office is pleased to announce funded PhD scholarships offered through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Transformation of Metals Industry (DigitalMetal CDT) at the University of Leicester, in collaboration with the Universities of Birmingham, Loughborough, Nottingham, and Warwick in the UK.
This opportunity is particularly relevant for students in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, and related fields.
The program aims to train a new generation of leaders capable of transforming the metals and manufacturing industry through the application of digital technology.
Type of the scholarship: PhD
Period or starting date: 22 September 2025
Available fields of study:
- Advanced manufacturing (e.g., casting, welding, surface engineering, near net-shape forming, additive manufacturing, robotic manufacturing)
- Metals and alloys engineering (e.g., development of Ni-base superalloys and high-performance alloys)
- Multi-objective digital twinning of manufacturing processes
- Digital-enabled right-first-time manufacturing
- Engineering management and manufacturing supply chain using digital tools

Funding:
The scholarship is fully funded and covers tuition fees (at UK rates. ask the host institution to pay the difference between UK and International fees for you) and living expenses.
Conditions:
- Applicants must have or expect to obtain a first class or upper second class BSc and/or M-level degree (or an equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant subject. Those with a lower second class honors degree (or equivalent) may be considered if they also hold a relevant Master's degree.
- Language Proficiency:
Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University of Leicester’s English language requirements. This can be demonstrated through academic qualifications taught in English, standardized English tests (such as IELTS), or completion of an approved pre-sessional English course.
