Legal encounter highlights land registration system in Palestine

The Institute of Law at Birzeit University held a legal encounter on land registration in Palestine, featuring Mousa Shakarneh, a judge and chairman of the Land and Water Settlement Committee. The event, supported by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, featured a discussion of issues related to the goals, accomplishments, and challenges to land registration in the West Bank.

Shakarneh gave a historical overview of land registration from the Ottoman Era until today. He explained related laws and regulations and reviewed the achievements of the commission.

Minister Shakarneh emphasized that a system for land registration can constitute a solid foundation for schemes that aim to develop Palestinian society and economy through measures that include creating more investment opportunities, ensuring women’s rights as landowners in order to reduce poverty, and taking a stand against the Israeli occupation’s measures to confiscate Palestinian lands.
