Faculty, students of architecture win prestigious Sabbagh and Khoury prizes

Birzeit University architecture students have picked up the first and third prizes in the Hassib Sabbagh and Said Khoury Engineering Award for their distinguished graduation projects. Nadia Habash, lecturer in the Architectural Engineering Department, ranked first for the category of Distinguished Projects for Enterprises.

Professor Habash’s project, “Restoring Araba Palaces,” was recognized as the best project in the Enterprises category. The project was also recognized as the best architectural project in Palestine for the year 2017.

The winners’ names were announced in a special ceremony held recently in Ramallah. The awards were presented in the following categories: Architecture Restoration; Creative Engineers; and Graduation Projects for Engineering College Students in Palestine.

Students Lina Abu Gharbiyeh, Ruba Sayaj, and Halima Al Joury were successfully chosen as runners-up in the Best Graduation Project category for their design on “Renovating Masoudieh Station - Al Hijaz Railway.” Students Walaa Samarah, Shahd Fawaka, and Rula Shaheen took third place for their project “The Resistance Museum - Bil’in Village.”

Professor Habash’s project, “Restoring Araba Palaces,” was recognized as the best project in the Enterprises category. The project was also recognized as the best architectural project in Palestine for the year 2017.

Professor of Architectural Engineering at Birzeit University Samar Al Nazer is an active member at the Award Committee and is the Head of the Individual Jury Committee.

The prize carries the names of Hasib Sabbagh and Said Khoury, who were pioneers in the field of architecture and who founded one of the most important construction companies in the world, .  The award honors their memory and is awarded in appreciation for their contributions to architecture in Palestine.
