"Status of Integrating Students with Disabilities: between thought and behavior"
The Counseling Section at the Deanship of Student Affairs,
in collaboration with the Center for Development Studies, organized a seminar
on 25 October 2011 titled: "Status of
Integrating Students with
Disabilities: between
thought and
behavior." The seminar completes
a series of seminars and activities organized by the Counseling Section under
the title: "Integration of Disabled Students into the University."
The seminar aimed to
begin a process of changing
the participants’ attitudes toward
disabled persons, which in
turn should be reflected in their practices and efforts toward a comprehensive view of disabled students. The intended change of attitude will integrate issues around
disability through a perspective of “right” not “sympathy.” Ms. Shatha Abu Srour from the BZU Center for Development Studies addressed various models for dealing with disability-related
issues, including charitable, medical,
social and human rights models. She further discussed the impact
of each model on mechanisms of intervention in cases of disabled persons,
referring to the relationship between the
concept of disability and
disabled persons.
BZU Social Counselor, Mona Al-Muhtaseb, stated that the project “Friends of Disabled Students at BZU” contributes to strengthening the integration process through the provision of support services, and the formation of social relationships between students,
positively impacting their lives on
campus.
