Conference Discusses Protecting Consumers Through Palestinian Law

The Birzeit University Faculty of Law and Public Administration held on October 22, 2014 a conference on consumer protection, aimed at increasing public awareness about consumer protection law.

In address opening the event, Faculty of Law and Public Administration dean Asem Khalil, explained that this conference is part of the European Union-funded project "Strengthening Postgraduate Education," that will develop a master’s of law and economics program at the faculty.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Henry Giacaman said he expects the conference will contribute to the development of legislative and practical channels by the proper authorities in order to achieve effective consumer protection in Palestine.

Law department chair Fayez Bikairat said that the conference is an attempt to diagnose vital problems and challenges facing consumer protection in Palestine and ways of overcoming them by keeping pace with modern international trends in consumer protection and taking advantage of comparative experiments in this area.

The conference included two sessions. The first session was entitled, “Consumer Protection: A General and Comparative Framework" and aimed to shed light on the state of consumer protection through some comparative legal models and to facilitate the nature of protection determined by special legislation in Palestine.

The second session was called, "Consumer Protection in Palestine: Selected Applications," which highlighted the realities on the ground in specific sectors of protection, based on the relevant legal provisions.
