Observing International Women's Day, the
Birzeit University Institute of Women's Studies (IWS) held on March 13, 2013 its fifth annual conference on "Education for Freedom and Social Justice."
The conference sought to create a space for reflection and dialogue on new ideas related to education from a gender perspective and its role in achieving freedom and social
justice.
Vice President of
Community Outreach Samia Halileh opened the conference by emphasizing the institute’s role in providing an
open climate for serious discussion on issues raised in its
annual conferences.
IWS director Islah
Jad said that the institute is motivated by the Birzeit
University culture and welcomed this year's very special
guests from South Africa and historic Palestine.
IWS researcher Lina Miari also spoke at the opening ceremonies, saying that the conference will seek to answer many questions,
most importantly addressing policies governing Palestinian
education, the status of women and
those with special needs, education
for freedom and social justice, as well as other issues.
