Writer Hourani Reviews Syrian Politics in Conflict
Palestinian
writer and researcher Faisal Hourani said that both the
Syrian opposition and Syrian regime seem headed
for their country’s destruction since major powers are not acting to end the conflict.
Speaking
at Birzeit University, the author said that big powers want to prevent Syria from playing an active regional, political and strategic role
in the future.
The presentation was sponsored by the Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies
on February 13, 2013. Hourani addressed
political conditions in Syria from a geo-political perspective, linking the
dispute to the global conflict between the
major powers, and discussing its impact on the Arab
regimes.
Hourani outlined the basic features of the Syrian regime: a solid system based on a set of rules established by Hafez al-Assad and then inherited
by his son Bashar and a strong army that is difficult to fragment, relies on security frameworks
in problem-solving, and has excellent
relations with the
Syrian bourgeoisie. The regime has also developed solid political relations with China and Russia and maintained
its image as an anti-occupation
and anti-imperialism system that supports
the Palestinian and Lebanese resistances, he said.
Regarding the Syrian opposition, Hourani
believes that the present
opposition has sought to marginalize the actual and proper opposition and that Arab funding, backed by the United States, has intensified financial corruption within
the opposition.
