Birzeit University Testing Laboratories

The Birzeit University Testing Laboratories  (BZUTL) was established in 1982 to be part of the University development activities specializing in research and monitoring in the areas of environmental and occupational health and quality of locally produced goods for consumer protection and industrial development.

BZUTL has three branches. The first branch, located at the University, houses the administrative offices and the main laboratory. These are also used by a number of academic departments at the University for teaching and training purposes. The branch in the Gaza Strip specializes in monitoring water and wastewater, while the third branch in Jericho acts as a monitoring, demonstration and training station for environmental agriculture and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Several units make up the Center. The Food Safety Unit (FSU), established in 1997, has been officially accredited by the Palestinian Standards Institute to test all kinds of food, bottled water, and other locally produced and imported products. The Water and Wastewater Unit works with local and international governmental and non-governmental agencies in order to conduct long-term surveying of water resources in Palestine. The Pharmaceutical Unit, accredited and contracted by the Ministry of Health as the official pharmaceutical and chemical quality control laboratory for the Palestinian National Authority, performs quality control tests and develops novel analytical methodologies on a variety of medicinal and veterinary drugs. In addition, CEOHS is accredited and cooperates with a number of Palestinian governmental agencies including the Ministries of Agriculture, Supplies, Environmental Affairs, Industry, Trade, Local Government and the Palestinian Water Authority, among others. The training unit works with a large assortment of individuals, government and NGO's in the areas of environmental agriculture, food safety, good laboratory practice, analytical techniques, environmental education and environmental health and toxicology.

BZUTL is an important resource  in its field of its specialty offering consultancy services to individuals, institutions and the industry. It has recently acquired accreditation as a training center from the inter-governmental Expert Committee.

The BZUTL funds its activities through contributions and contracts to conduct research and carry out analytical work.
