Endowed Scholarships

GIVING TO BIRZEIT UNIVERSITY

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Endowing student scholarships at Birzeit University is a principled means to meet student needs for educational monies, while enabling donors to leave a legacy worthy of recognition and emulation.  An endowment is a gift placed in an income-generating fund with a percentage used to cover students' education costs.  Since the principal is never expended, the gift provides financial support to the University and its students in perpetuity.  Further, the gift is invested to maximize its value over time.

Gifts equaling or in excess of $30,000 will enable the University to establish a named scholarship in honor of the donor or in tribute to another individual according to the donor's wishes.  A gift in this amount will ensure the University's ability to cover the full cost for a student studying in the University.

Endowment Policy

Endowed Scholarships will be disbursed according to the University’s endowment policy, which specifies the portion of the income from the scholarship's endowment that is to be expended as student awards, with the remainder utilized to maintain and grow the scholarship's principal.  According to the Board of Trustees Endowment Policy for Birzeit University this amount can not exceed 5% of the principal plus the returns.  Disbursements of awards commence one year after the scholarship becomes fully endowed.

Acknowledgement

The donor of the scholarship will receive annual student reports from the recipients of the scholarship.  In addition to being acknowledged for their kind contributions through a named scholarship, and annual acknowledgement in the publications of the University, a plaque will be placed on the University grounds in honor of the donors establishing named endowed scholarships.
