Arabic Language and Literature

The Arabic Department strives to create a distinctive positive spirit towards scientific research among staff and students. It aims to have an excellence in teaching literary and linguistic courses and to promote students’ critical thinking in order to turn out outstanding graduates with adequate skills and authentic values to foster the sense of belonging to their community and homeland. Additionally the program aims to consolidate students’ talents to keep up with the latest IT development.

  • Develop the Arabic Department and upgrade its staff academically and in conducting scientific research.
  • Acquaint students with the latest trends in Arabic Linguistics and Literature and their modern and old theories.
  • Keeping track of Arabic Language features, characteristics, criticism and its development through ages.
  • Empower students’ thinking, analysis and production skills.
  • Train students to write academic research and acquaint them with the up to date methodology and techniques.
  • Establish a center for manuscripts in the department in specific and the university at large in order to edit and publish these manuscripts.

 

  • Identify the methodologies of academic research and investigate the texts.
  • Keeping track of traditional and modern linguistic theories, linguistic curricula and their relevant soft wares.
  • Acquaint students with some Semitic languages and their original forms of writing.
  • Identify the trends and old and new movements in Arabic Literature.
  • Comprehend the concept of Language connotations, Semantics and Comparative Literature and its relation to Plagiarism.
  • Identify the rhetorical aspect of Holy Quran.   
  • Deduce grammatical rules and voice their judgment on them.
  • Differentiate between modern criticism curricula and their characteristics while analyzing texts.
  • Judge poetic and prosaic texts that reveal artistic and realistic features and their linguistic and syntactic perceptions as well.
  • Compare/contrast between old rhetoric and modern stylistics.
  • Type an accurate text in accordance with the modern language syntax and styles using the computer.
  • Examine influential relationships between Arabic Literature and foreign Literature.
  • Evaluate the phenomenon of Orientalism and its effects in Arabic Literature. 
  • Develop their thinking, analysis and inference skills.
  • Evaluate literary, cultural and linguistic genre and discourse.
  • Accomplish skills that enable them to join a Ph.D. program.

 

  • Teaching Arabic language and literature in schools and universities in Palestine and abroad.
  • Working in libraries and centers specialized in keeping and maintaining manuscripts.

  • Working in research centers/organizations specialized in culture, language and literature.

 

Program Requirements:

  1. Students should pass successfully remedial courses from Bachelor Program in Arabic Language and Literature no more than 9 credit hours.
  2. Students have to complete successfully 36 credit hours, as follows:
  • 18 credit hours of Compulsory courses 
  • 12 credit hours of elective courses 
  • 6 credit hours for thesis track or seminar track.
