About the faculty of science

The Faculty of Science was established in 1972 as the first Faculty at Birzeit University.  It has been granting Bachelor degrees since 1976.  

  • Physics: high temperature superconductors, protein dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, particle physics and nanotechnology and low-energy nuclear physics.
  • Chemistry: bioorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, molecular orbital calculations, and advanced analytical methods in addition to nanotechnology and its applications.
  • Biology: biodiversity in Palestine, heavy metal contamination and toxicity, , environmental molecular toxicology, topics in agricultural production, cancer cells and their treatment, and DNA and protein metabolism.
  • Mathematics: ring theory, topology, game theory, statistics, microeconomics, discrete dynamical systems, partial differential equations, co-algebra.

Faculty members are involved in the development of school curricula with the Ministry of Educations and Higher Education. Besides, Faculty members provide analytical and consulting services to various local companies and institutions. In addition, they are involved in arranging and participating in various local conferences on teaching and scientific research. Three years ago, the Faculty has established Michel and Sanieh Hakim Observatory Planetarium, the first of its kind in Palestine, which brings together interested persons from the University and the local community and holds several activities open for all interested.
