Students prepare for entrepreneurial competitions in information session

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit organized an information session for Birzeit University students in which it detailed two programs designed for young, ambitious student entrepreneurs with world-changing business ideas.

The Women Entrepreneurship Initiative, launched by the Palestine Information and Communication Technology Incubator, supports young women entrepreneurs in the ICT sector through a competition in which they can present and refine their business ideas. The program provides business support services and seed funding for innovators with aspiring ideas in the West Bank and Gaza.

The second program is launched by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit and open to university students from all faculties. Four projects will be selected, each to receive $25,000 in seed capital.

Two groups of Birzeit students have previously entered this competition and won $25,000 each. The first group, comprising pharmacy majors Ala Badwan, Aya Jarrar, and Safa Jebrini, developed “Medsina,” a healthcare subscription app through which users can order healthcare services and over-the-counter healthcare products.

Jumana Sad and Tasneem Jamjoum, two computer science majors, developed and won with the mobile game app “Sky Gate,” an action strategy game that takes place in Jerusalem.

“By holding such sessions, we encourage Birzeit University students to participate in competitions that are designed to support innovation,” said Atef Shkokani, program coordinator at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit. “We provide students with support and mentoring services and with resources, which includes connecting them with developers and software engineers who help translate their ideas into real-world applications and projects.”
