Birzeit University’s architect students got six prize in the Tom Kay annual competition for free architectural drawing 2014. The contest is organized by the Palestinian Centre for Architectural Conservation/Riwaq. The jury consisted of Sameh Abboushi, Amer Shomali and Lana Joudeh.

Birzeit University students competed with 54 students from different Palestinian universities. The students were judged based on their hand drawings’ skills and their ability to reflect reality.

The university’s Department of Architectural Engineering Chair Yazeed expressed his pride in his students. He assured that such competitions can help youth use their pencils to explore, appreciate and draw Palestinian architectural heritage.

The Tom Kay Award for freehand architectural drawing is a competition launched in 2008 in memory of British architect, Tom Kay. He worked as a visiting professor at Birzeit University between 2002 and 2005. He joined RIWAQ as a volunteer in 2006. Kay is fascinated by the Palestinian architectural heritage.
