Right to Education holds seminar on education in Israeli prisons

The Right to Education Campaign at Birzeit University organized a seminar on education in Israeli prisons on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

Featuring Rasha Abbas, a legal researcher at Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, and Abdel-Fatah Dawleh, a member of the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs who has been held in Israeli detention centers, the seminar focused on local and international laws related to the right to education in prisons and highlighted the seminars and lectures organized by Palestinian prisoners.

Abbas and Dawleh discussed the realities of imprisonment in Israeli jails and detention centers and reviewed the secondary and tertiary education opportunities available to Palestinians in Israeli prisons. The pair also outlined changes made by the Israel Prison Service to how and when prisoners could sit for tests and pursue their degrees.

The seminar is part of the 2019 Colonization Resistance Week that includes symposia, public lectures, group book readings, and film screenings that highlight how the occupation impacts every aspect of Palestinian life.
