New Book Explores Media Techniques of Muslim Brotherhood and al-Jazeera

The Arab Institute for Research and Publishing in Beirut has published a new book by Birzeit University Media Department lecturer Walid Shurafa. “From Discourse Power to Power of Discourse,” includes an analysis of the discourse of the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Jazeera satellite channel during the recent series of upheavals in the Arab world, the Arab Spring.

The book’s six chapters finds that Al-Jazeera and the Muslim Brotherhood movement have accurately and intricately demonstrated integrated media techniques via various forms of text, images, comments, religious programs and political talk shows.

Director of the Arab World for Research and Development Center Nader Said commented, saying, "This book shows that the role of the media has become more likely to breed conflict than present differences in opinion.”

Shurafa is a media and cultural studies professor. His MA dissertation explored Gibran Khalil Gibran’s books and his 2006 PhD analyzed Edward Said’s works. Shurafa has published three novels, the last of which “Al qadem min alqiyama (Doomsday)” was published by the Arab Institute for Studies and Publishing in 2013.
