Lecture series continues, gender expert tracks online gender violence

As part of Birzeit University’s lecture series, the Faculty of Business and Economics in cooperation with the Institute of Women’s Studies held a session that discussed online gender-based violence, featuring legal researcher and gender expert Shahrazad Odeh, on October 9, 2019.

The lecture explained how researchers can track gender violence by researching internet users, their preferences and opinions. Odeh pointed out that despite an increase in the number of internet users, there is a gap between women and men, where women have less freedom of expression than men.

Regarding online gender violence, Odeh emphasized the fact that online violence against women has increased and can be tracked and monitored by using algorithms and hashtags.

Shahrazad Odeh is a human rights lawyer and researcher whose work focuses on gender ramifications within legal systems. She obtained her LLM in Public and International Law and Gender Studies. Odeh is a partner in Zaher Law Firm, Jerusalem, where she represents Palestinian women and other residents of the city.

The fourth lecture of the series will be held on Wednesday October 16, 2019, focusing on digital ethnography and a scientific analysis of #Israa’_Ghraib, and the hybridity and cultural logic of the digital era.
