Innovative University-Industry Partnerships

October 15, 2011

The Department of Business
Administration and Marketing, Faculty of Commerce and Economics in Birzeit University is hosting a
one-day conference entitled "Innovative University-Industry Partnerships" focusing on the role of
university-industry partnerships in stimulating growth and accelerating innovation.
The conference is being held on October 15th, 2011 on the university premises, in the Conference
Hall of the Said Khoury Building for Development Studies. The British Council and PADICO are
partners in this endeavor.

The purpose of this conference is to
provide a platform in which research from overlapping branches meet and the opportunity for
collegial networking and exchanging of ideas between academia and industry, the government,
relevant NGOs, and expert sources of knowledge. International speakers from renowned
universities specialized in the conference themes are participating therein, in addition to
local speakers from the business community, academia and civil society. This collective
contribution seeks to integrate both perspectives, thus providing benefit by bridging the gaps that
exist between universities and industry in Palestine.

By engaging with local firms and
encouraging them to share their expertise, skills and technology, universities can accommodate the
nature and needs of local firms and thus yield creative collaborative arrangements that
produce sufficiently qualified, highly relevant graduates and university programs tailored to local
industry requirements. Through the support of an enabling environment, the universities would
benefit from the opportunities on hand to increase their resources and collaborate with firms
to successfully upgrade and commercialize their products through flexible licensing agreements.
In return, industry should be able to effectively capitalize on universities' knowledge-based ideas, skills,
intellectual exploration and research.

Conference Objective: To shed light on the need to develop
long-lasting innovative relationships and trust between the universities and industry with support
from the public sector and to demonstrate how collaborative relationships embedded in innovative
thinking could create enhanced value for both parties and have positive spillover effects
that are beneficial to all the constituents and to the Palestinian economy.
