Faculty of Business and Economics concludes first round of Corporate Competition

The Faculty of Business and Economics at Birzeit University held the concluding ceremony for the first round of the Corporate Governance Competition on December 20, 2017.

The competition, organized in cooperation with the Palestine Capital Market Authority (PCMA), aims to identify and raise awareness on corporate governance issues and challenges while providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary for any future career prospects.

The ceremony was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics Dr. Grace Khoury; the General Director for Research and Development at the PCMA Bashar Abu Zarour; the Secretary General of the Palestine Insurance Federation Amjad Jaddou; and a number of faculty members and students.

At the end of the ceremony, the winning team in the first round of the competition – held at the university level – was announced. The team members were: Mureen Koba, Lulu’a Ibrahim, Amani Al Bazar, Lina Al Bader, and Yasmeen Rabi’.

Dr. Khoury highlighted the Faculty’s continued efforts in providing its students with a host of experiences that would “hone their skills and build their social and professional skillsets.” She said, “We’ve always sought to provide our students with the best possible synthesis of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and this event is one of many that we organize to better integrate our students into the market, as well as to provide the local market with an exceptional, competitive workforce that understands the realities and challenges of the modern corporate world.”

Abu Zarour noted that the competition was part of a project that aims to “integrate a corporate governance course within the existing academic programs of the Palestinian universities.” He said, “The Corporate Governance Competition in the Palestinian universities is one of the first initiatives of its kind in the Arab World. It aims to connect the academic results and outcomes of universities with the realities of job market demands, as well as to raise students’ awareness of this concept.”

“The Palestine Insurance Federation,” said Secretary General Jaddou, “pays great attention to and takes great care toward higher education and students in Palestine. We always welcome the opportunity to sponsor extracurricular events held by the Business and Economics Faculty at Birzeit University.”
