BZU Testing Laboratories Concludes 1st Phase of Study on Mercury Contamination of Products - News

BZU Testing Laboratories concluded the first phase of a
scientific study, which is the first of its kind in Palestine, on mercury
contamination of local and imported products. The study mainly focused on tracing
levels of mercury in a wide range of samples of food products in the
Palestinian market, especially canned food, candy, and different types of fish
and animal food.  The study also traced
mercury in various types of cosmetics, as well as soil and water samples. The
Canadian International Relief Fund for the Afflicted and Needy (IRFAN) donated the
Automated Mercury Analyzer used in the study, which is the only device of its
kind in Palestine.

Preliminary results showed that most of the tested food
products are free from mercury traces, while some cosmetic products contain
high levels of mercury.

Mercury is a hazardous substance that accumulates in the
human body as a result of repeated consumption, thus the body cannot purge it
easily. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that mercury affects the
nervous system and leads to memory loss and skin infection, among many other side
effects.

It is worth noting here that the work of BZU Testing
Laboratories is directed towards serving the Palestinian community. The Testing
Laboratories also work in collaboration with specialized and qualified local
and international agencies in conducting tests and research.
