BZU Institute of Law and Ministry of Justice Launch Diploma in Professional Legal Skills - News

On 9 July 2011 the Institute of Law (IoL) at BZU in
partnership with the Ministry of Justice launched a diploma program in
Professional Legal Skills funded by the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP). The event was attended by the Minister of Justice Dr. Ali Khashan,
Acting BZU President Dr. Sami El Sayrafi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of
Justice Mr. Khalil Karajeh, Director of the Institute of Law Dr. Ghassan
Faramand, and Head of the UNDP James Noonan.

Dr. Khashan addressed the importance of a legal skills
diploma in qualifying a legal cadre within the Palestinian National Authority.
The program is a step towards professionalizing legal education for those who
work in the legal profession, including future judges, researchers and
government officials in the field of law. Dr. Khashan highlighted the fact that
the program will strengthen the rule of law within Palestine.

Dr. Sayrafi applauded the efforts undertaken by IoL and the
Ministry of Justice, and thanked the UNDP for its support.

The Director of the UNDP, Mr. James Noonan, expressed his pleasure
at launching the project, which is unique in two ways: first, the program is
highly sustainable and, second, it draws on the experience and expertise of the
IoL.

The Institute’s Director, Dr. Ghassan Faramand, stressed
that the legal skills diploma targets those working at ministries and
governmental institutions, and is designed to train and qualify legal advisers,
thereby improving their professional capacity to perform efficiently and
effectively.

The diploma program will be implemented over a two-year
period and will graduate 25 trainees each year. The trainees are selected from the
legal advisers working at the ministries and institutions of the Palestinian
National Authority.
