Birzeit University supports the fight against breast cancer

Interactive booths and awareness activities appeared on the Birzeit University campus to launch a campaign for breast cancer early detection, joining the rest of the world in annual Global Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The campaign is being organized by the Faculty of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Professions, the Deanship of Students Affairs, and Dunya Women's Cancer Center.

Birzeit University has held this campaign for four consecutive years. The university is dedicated to serving the well-being of the community, and committed to providing a supportive environment that helps students be more aware of critical causes that directly affect student, faculty and staff wellbeing and health by fostering resilience through a range of educational, preventative and support initiatives.

Department of Nutrition and Dietetics faculty member Safaa Muhanna said, "There is a lot to do to lower women's risk of breast cancer. Early detection is very important as it reduces cancer occurrence by 90 percent."

During the opening ceremony, a play was performed by Basta theater troupe aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of the importance of early detection. In addition, students were offered the chance to donate their hair to women who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or radiation.

Dunya Women's Cancer Center is organizing Pink Women's Race Day on Friday, October 28, 2016 to help the fight for breast cancer awareness. The race will start in the Old City of Ramallah.
