An advanced improvisation class in the Arabic maqam genre. Students will learn the theory of each maqam and its practical application, and will develop their musical skills in building stylistic maqam improvisations. Study of Iraqi maqams and maqam analysis of Iraqi repertoire; building of maqams and Eastern modes, writing maqams, and the theory of Ottoman maqams.
