An advanced improvisation class in the Arabic maqam genre. Students will learn the theory of each maqam and its practical application, and will develop their musical skills in building stylistic maqam improvisations. Introduction to tetrachords and the building of Arabic modal families;
maqam analysis and the building of maqam improvisations of the Egyptian school; analysis of maqams from the early Arabic repertoire.
