“Journeys in writing: Malta, Palestine and literatures in between”

This lecture will address the thematic and discursive itineraries of Malta’s post-Independence poetry, with a focus on the work of some of the major exponents within the Movement for the Revival of Literature (Moviment Qawmien Letterarju) writing in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Discussing poets like Mario Azzopardi, Daniel Massa and Victor Fenech, the lecture will trace a complex poetics of political transition that sought to locate and negotiate a national imaginary in-between the events of Independence, the envisioning of Malta as a Republic, and the ensuing economic freedom from British rule.
