DAAD introduces new team, presents opportunities to deepen academic ties

Emphasizing on the solid, long-standing cooperation of DAAD with Birzeit University and Palestine’s higher education system, on September 15, 2018, Birzeit University President Abudllatif Abuhijleh welcomed the new team who joined DAAD East Jerusalem to teach German in the BA program at the university.

President Abuhijleh stressed the vibrant relationship that the university and DAAD have enjoyed over the years. He welcomed the new team and expressed his pride in the growth of the German bachelor’s program, which this year welcomed 20 new students, in addition to the 40 students who are already enrolled.

The DAAD team, represented by the Director of DAAD in East Jerusalem Christina Stahlbock, discussed how both parties can deepen their partnership to offer scholarships and learning opportunities for a larger number of students to study in Germany, especially for PhD students.

Abuhijleh and Stahlbock agreed that there is a great number of former DAAD scholarship recipients in Palestine who are from Birzeit University, who can help other students to apply for scholarships to study at German universities.

Stahlbock also talked about the preparations for the visit of the President- Minister of the State of Saxony to Birzeit University in next October, who will be accompanied with the President of the University of Leipzig, where further academic and research cooperation can be developed.

The DAAD office, located at Birzeit University, offers academic exchanges for faculty, students, and staff. A number of German master’s and PhD students visit Palestine annually on scholarships for studies and research. Beyond these individual grants, DAAD provides assistance for the institutional cooperation between German and Palestinian institutions of higher education.
