Electrical Engineering Department at BZU held a lecture on "A New Wavelet Packet Transform-Based Disturbance Detector for Digital Protective Relays," on 2 February 2011, delivered by Dr. Saleh A. Saleh from the School of Ocean Technology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL, Canada.

Abstract:

A  simplified structure for 1-level WPT-based MRAs is developed and constructed. The new 1-level MRAs are constructed to extract localized frequency sub-bands contents of q-d axis components of measured voltages and/or currents. The extracted frequency sub-bands are utilized for detecting and classifying transient disturbances. The new 1-level WPT-based MRAs for digital protective relays are tested for different applications under various types of transient disturbances. Several experimental performance results are obtained from testing the new digital relay in protecting power transformer, wind energy conversion systems, micro-grid power systems and motor drives systems. Moreover, comparative performance of the 1-level and 2-level WPT-based MRA for digital protective relays are provided to demonstrate the speed, accuracy and reliability of the new 1-level WPT-based MRA.
