Masters  Program in Community Psychology

Program Director: Dr. Ibrahim Makkawi

The masters program in community psychology presents an interdisciplinary broader perspective of community mental health based on the investigation of various environmental factors that either hinder or facilitate mental health, normal development and psychological adjustment both for communities and individuals.  We aspire to achieve such objectives through the utilization of a wide variety of research methodologies and community interventions bearing in mind the specific social, cultural and political context of the Palestinian society. Community interventions are derived from the re-construction of mental health disorders based on the dialectical interplay between environmental and personal factors and not on individual-based old tradition of blaming the victim.

The program utilizes a distinguished educational strategy of critical praxis based on the interconnectedness and dialectical interplay between academic research and applied practice, and between theory and community intervention towards social justice. The students are expected to develop a variety of skills for community participatory intervention and prevention program  development, leading to the development of critical consciousness through action and libratory social change.
