Master Program in Applied Statistics
Objectives of the program:
1. To qualify graduates as specialized individuals and researchers in the field of Applied Statistics including basic theoretical concepts and skills needed to deal with different types of data, methods of data collection and classification and data analysis.
2. To qualify graduates as users of statistical packages and data bases.
3. To qualify graduates as participants in promotion of advancement of scientific knowledge in the field and as practitioners and users of data for better understanding of natural and social phenomena and as providers of needed services for the local and international community.
4. The program also offers short courses and consultancy services for the local community and students of other graduate programs.
Admission Requirements: Qualified applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
1. The first university degree in any of the following fields: Science, Mathematics, Health or Medical science, Engineering, Agriculture, or any of the social sciences that deal with data such as Education, Psychology, Economics, Business Administration, Demography.
2. The program committee decides on any remedial courses which may be needed by any applicant.
Program Requirements:
Students are required to complete 36 credit hours according to the following distribution:
a. Core Courses:
18 credit hours including the following courses:
APST630 Introduction to Applied Statistics (Data collection: Methods and tools).
APST631 Probability and Inferential Statistics.
APST632 Analysis of Quantitative Data.
APST633 Analysis of Qualitative Data.
APST634 Experimental Design.
APST730 Seminar.
* Graduates of Statistics may choose to replace a maximum of two of the above requirements by two advanced course pending on approval of the program committee.
b. Elective Courses:
12 credit hours from the following courses:
APST635 Nonparametric Statistics.
APST636 Sampling.
APST731 Demography.
APST732 Multivariate Analysis.
APST733 Application in any one of the following areas :
APST733 /1 Applications in Behavioral Sciences.
APST733 /2 Biostatistics.
APST733 /3 Econometrics.
APST733 /4 Demography and Census.
APST733 /5 Agricultural Statistics.
APST734 Longitudinal Studies.
APST735 Linear Models.
APST735 Special Topics in Applied Statistics.
* Students may opt to replace any two of the above elective courses by other two courses offered by other graduate programs at the university pending on advanced approval.
c. Research Component:
6 credit hours in one of the following options:
1. Track A: Thesis ( APST860 ) Masters thesis
2. Track B: Seminars ( APST830 and APST831 ): Seminar and passing a general oral examination.
* Students have to apply for one of those options after the completion of at least 12 credit hours. The decision will be made by the program committee depending on the available capacity of the program, and the committee decides on transfer from one option to the other.
