Seminar on Palestinian Reconciliation

On 7 December 2011, the Political Science Department at BZU organized a seminar titled "Palestinian Reconciliation," in which Fateh Central Committee Member Azzam al-Ahmad was the keynote speaker. The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Public Administration, Dr. Saleh Abdel Jawad; Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Al-Ahmed; Head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Abdel Nasser al-Najjar; Chairperson of the Political Science Department, Imad Ghayathah; and a large number of faculty members, students and interested individuals.

Al-Ahmad confirmed that the National Agreement Document (NAD), the Egyptian Paper for Inter Palestinian Reconciliation and the Cairo Declaration of 2005 are terms of reference with respect to national reconciliation. He added that the truce agreement between the Palestinian National Authority and Israel addresses both the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Al-Ahmad further stated that Hamas had agreed on peaceful popular resistance in light of the Palestinian realities on the ground, the volatile Arab situation and US hegemony in the United Nations.

Emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between the reconciliation agreement and ending the political split, al-Ahmad added: "In case the reconciliation agreement is implemented, then we still have a long way to end this political split, the result of which has been social disintegration, clearly demonstrated between Palestinian families in Gaza Strip. We want a radical political solution and not a tribal one – a solution that ends the social division." He explained that social reconciliation needs time and effort to repair what political division has damaged.

As to the next elections, al-Ahmed commented: "The month of May 2012 is the election time, but it's not a sacred date.” He added that the legislative and presidential elections will take place in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem. He also stressed that the Fateh Movement will not allow elections to take place without the participation of Jerusalemites, and that all Palestinians in the Diaspora will participate in the National Council elections.
