Department of Civil Engineering
Overview
The civil engineering department was established in 1979. The first Civil engineering graduates of 1985 were only seven. Since then, the department has grown immensely in terms of number of students, staff and facilities. The average annual intake of students is approximately 70. The number of students affiliated to the department is about 250 out of a total of 1300 students enrolled in the Engineering Faculty as a whole. The department has a total of 11 full-time teaching staff, 5 part-time teaching staff, and 7 teaching assistants and technicians.
Over the years, the department has continuously reviewed and updated its teaching plan and taught courses to respond to the new international teaching trends as well as to meet the requirements of the local market. This resulted in a reduction in credit hours requirements from 170 to 160 and the introduction of several advanced courses in four concentration areas, namely,
- Structural Engineering,
- Water and Environmental Engineering,
- Transportation and Highway Engineering, and,
- Building Engineering (Jointly with the Architectural Department).
Department Mission and objectives
The Department of Civil Engineering aspires to equip engineering graduates with technical know-how and sound ethics to implement economic, safe and environmentally sensitive Civil Engineering projects that best serve the community and to provide them with the leverage to compete internationally with their peers in the academic and professional arenas.
