Department of Civil Engineering
Overview
The civil engineering department was established in 1979. The first Civil engineering graduates of 1985 were only seven. Since then, the department has grown immensely in terms of number of students, staff and facilities. The average annual intake of students is approximately 70. The number of students affiliated to the department is 270 out of a total of 1300 students in the Engineering Faculty as a whole. The department has a total of 10 full-time teaching staff, 8 part time teaching staff, in addition to 8 teaching assistants and technicians.
Over the years, the department has continuously reviewed and updated its teaching policy and taught courses to respond to the new teaching trends internationally as well as to meet the requirements of the local market. This resulted in a reduction in credit hours requirements from 170 to 160 and the introduction of advanced courses, in one of four concentration areas, namely,
- Structural Engineering,
- Water and Environmental Engineering,
- Transportation and Highway Engineering,
- Building Engineering (Jointly with the Architectural Department).
