Basketball Championship Starts at BZU
On 5 December 2009, BZU hosted the Female Students Basketball Championship, sponsored by the Federation of Palestinian Universities, in which BZU, Al Quds University, An Najah University and Bethlehem University have participated.
The Director of the Physical Education Program at BZU. Mr. Ali al-Tahir, explained that BZU one of the first universities to set up basketball, volleyball, table tennis and chess teams for female students. He pointed out that team members are selected through an advertisement at the beginning of each semester, offering opportunities to participate in various university teams, in order to be selected and trained to improve their level of participation in such tournaments. BZU was the one to propose the establishing of a Sports Federation of Palestinian Universities.
The tournament began by a coin toss, where the first game was between BZU and Al Quds University/Abu Dees in the presence of BZU President, Dr. Nabeel Kassis , Director of the Public Relations Office, Manal Issa, and the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Mohammed Al-Ahmed, ending with BZU's victory scoring 42 / 19.
The 2nd match was between the Bethlehem University and Abu Dees University, ending w
ith the victory of Bethlehem University , scoring 50/13. The 3rd tournament was between BZU and An-Najah University, ending with the victory of BZU and scoring 50 / 3.
The final game was between BZU and the University of Bethlehem, which was highly and positively competitive, wherein BZU took the lead and was able to end the match at 29 - 24 for the benefit of BZU,. Thus, BZU won the first place in the basketball championship for female students.
At the end of the tournaments, the President of the Sports Federation of the Palestinian Universities, Ms. Faten Barghouti and Mr. Ali Taher distributed cups and medals to the winning teams.
On the sidelines of the tournament, the Sports Federation held a meeting at BZU to discuss the financial and administrative report of the delegated team that participated in the Abu Dhabi Championship and was placed the second, and adopted the table tennis championship by-laws, which will take place at Al Najah University, in addition to discussing the Arab Championship to be held in Egypt.
