Workshop on the Geographic and Hydro Chemical Specifications of Rainfall in the Governorate of Ramallah and Al Bireh

On 17 November 2009, a workshop was held on trends in the rainfall over the Governorate of Ramallah and Al Bireh, and its hydro chemical and physical specifications.

This workshop comes within the framework of joint cooperation between the Department of Geography and Chemistry at BZU, and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, represented by thirty-eight schools in the Governorate.

The workshop was opened by the Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Adnan Al-Yahya, who valued the cooperation between the two parties, stressing its connection with the requirements of the citizen's daily life in the present and future.

Dr. Hussein Rimawi presented a paper that addressed the trends in the rainfall stations that record the quantities of rainfall on some schools of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

Dr. Marwan Ghanem talked about the physical and chemical results of the rainwater specifications in the Governorate of Ramallah, which are characterized by the basic type and contains a concentrated ratio of bi-carbonate that doesn't have a negative impact on citizen's health. He pointed out that most of the samples that were analyzed, which includes approximately 38 schools in the Ramallah Governorate are free of chemical pollution, with some dust and sand that have a simple effect on citizen's health.

Mr. Ibrahim Shalash overviewed positive aspects of the project and the technical problems with regard to the measurement equipment and the collection of samples to be sent BZU laboratories. He focused on the professional cooperation with schools in this field, briefly explaining the traditional measurement devices that have been distributed among the schools in the Governorate of Ramallah, and the electronic meteorological station that was installed at the university, since the beginning of the current rainy season 2009/2010.
