Faculty of Arts

Established as one of the first two faculties at Birzeit University in 1972, the Faculty of Arts is now the largest faculty on campus in terms of student enrollment and variety of programs.

The Faculty of Arts is composed of the Departments of:

 It also includes inter-departmental programs in Fine Arts and Palestine &  Arabic Studies.

Through its faculty and programs, the Faculty of Arts supports intellectual inquiry and development research in the spirit and substance of the liberal education. The liberal education includes the knowledge and skills which enable critical examination and prepare students for informed and productive participation in society.

The Faculty of Arts plays a vital role in the cultural and public life of the Palestinian national community, preparing students for sustained cultural and aesthetic enjoyment, for a lifetime of learning and for becoming leaders in an increasingly sophisticated society.

Research Interests

Faculty members are involved in various areas of research in the fields of education, sociology, cultural studies, geography, history, and language and literature studies.

Current research activities include: national identity and psychological adjustment, gender and schooling, democracy education, curriculum analysis, social movements, empowerment, violence against children, the documentation of demolished villages in historical Palestine, Palestinian heritage and folklore, identity and democracy, land degradation and desertification, water and environmental pollution, natural resources and management, regional and urban planning, population studies, comparative literature and linguistics, history of Palestine, Palestinian nationalism, the Zionist movement, and conflict management and resolution.

Community Outreach

The Faculty conducts community outreach programs in education and national curriculum development. Moreover, the faculty conducts various consultancies, training and evaluation for local institutions. It also organizes public lectures, conferences and art exhibitions.
